Should we Question our Beliefs?
Yes, we absolutely should question our beliefs! Too many times people state a point of view that they were taught by someone else. In reality they have not thought it through, but they would stake their life on it. In fact, the less people intelligently question their own opinions, the more dogmatic they are likely to be.
When we were children we obeyed and believed what adults told us. That was appropriate because our parents and teachers knew more than we did.
As adults we have the right to question our beliefs and choose our actions. In fact, it is not just a right, it is our duty to do so.
It is so important to take responsibility for our actions and part of that involves questioning everything.
At work, is your way the only way to do things? Or are you prepared to listen to another person’s point of view. Good leadership always involves listening just as much as relating to clients does.
What about your personal relationships? Have you observed a pattern that you have got into? Where did this pattern come from? How can you break out of it?
What do you really believe in your faith? How is that the same or different from what your parents and teachers taught you? Where do you see growth in your spirituality these days?
Get Help with Questioning your Beliefs
In coaching I use a method of asking questions to encourage you to think differently. Because when we are stuck, it is so often our thinking that needs an update. So when you cling to a belief that is no longer serving you, I might ask “Is that really true?” or “What if you were to question that belief?”
Many people are frightened of change. This is really a fear of the unknown. But when we question our beliefs we don’t have to throw out the baby with the bathwater. We keep what is good for us to believe, but discard what is harming us. Although we may have got into a negative pattern it does not have to continue for ever. We are free to choose how we live and to build better ways of relating to people.
That is one of the things you can learn to do in my online coaching. If you want to try it out, I would love to offer you a powerful coaching call so you can experience it for yourself. It is my gift to you.
