How can we stop self doubt?
Why do we doubt ourselves so much? I believe we doubt ourselves because of the criticism we received as children.
We look up to our parents and believe everything they say. So when they criticise us, we believe that as well.
Take for example a child who is told “You’re not good at art.” What’s the result going to be? They are going to believe that and they’re going to repeat it any time anyone asks them, they are going to say, ”No, I’m not good at art.“ And they will probably never take up art in their life.
Unless they discover that was bullshit. Because actually there is no such thing as a human who is no good at art. We are born to create. We are all natural artists singers writers, dancers, and actors. And if we appear to be bad at those things it ’s because we doubt ourselves.
The mind is so incredibly powerful. As Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” This applies to many things, not just the arts. Before Roger Bannister ran the 4 minute mile, everyone thought it was impossible. But within a year achieving it, 4 other runners also did it. They were able to do it because suddenly they believed it was possible.
So what if we were to decide that we can do things? Will we instantly be able to achieve all our goals? No, we have to learn the skills. But we have a much better chance of achieving them if we believe it’s possible.
This week I did a training called Stop Self Doubt. I shared three things we all need to do in order to stop doubting ourselves. Whether that’s to do with building a business, learning an instrument, or becoming fit. Whatever goal it is you’re trying to achieve, we have to do these 3 things in order to get there. That’s what everyone has done who has got any kind of success.
Sometimes we don’t realise how much effort we have to put into something to achieve success. We just expect to be successful on our first or second attempt. But that’s just not how it works. If you would like a link to the video, let me know.
